Rules for Making a Live Town
The following rules we publish for the special guidance of our own citizens, and we want each person to receive them as if addressed solely to himself and under his own name. Do not read them and say, "Oh, that just fits Neighbor A's case!" or, "This strikes Neighbor B." -- but take it right home; there is something in these nine rules that applies to your case. Dear Reader; find it, and heed it:

  1. Patronize the businesses of your own town.
  2. Speak well of worthy public enterprise.
  3. Sell your business lots at reasonable prices.
  4. Induce business men to locate in your own town.
  5. Speak well to strangers of your town and its people.
  6. Encourage your local paper by subscribing for, advertising in, and paying for it.
  7. Always sum up your expenses when you visit places outside of your own to buy goods.
  8. If anything should be undertaken that may be of benefit to the town, do not speak ill of it to others because you happen to be prejudiced against it.
  9. If you have a surplus of money, do not invest it in far off speculation, but give yourself and your town the benefit of it by establishing some profitable factory.
