Helen Vernette Smith - 1876 -1889
Grandaughter of Judge L.W. Smith, Verndale was named
in her honor, combining "Vern" from her name and "dale" from the beautiful location of the village.

The Merchants Hotel
Constructed in the late 1870s, this hotel was originally called the Bolton House.
It was located on the north side of the railroad tracks, facing Mason Ave.
